James Hetfield and Jerry Cantrell: an album together?

Jerry Cantrellguitarist of Alice In Chainsspoke about the possibility of collaborating with James Hetfield the frontman of Metallica.

Responding to fan questions about the new issue of Metal Hammer, Cantrell was asked if another collaboration might be on the cards, after the sporadic joint activities they’ve had over the years: Cantrell was one of the guest artists who participated in the revisit Of “Tuesday’s Gone” of Lynyrd Skynyrd by Metallica on the metal icons’ 1998 covers album, “Garage Inc.”

Since then, the Alice In Chains guitarist has also made numerous appearances with Hetfield and other Metallica members at special benefit shows.

Cantrell, when asked if he will ever make an album with Hetfield, said:

James and I talked about it, more or less. We never had a formal conversation, but I played with him at Kirk Hammett’s (Metallica guitarist) house. I also spent a night or two at his house and we hung out with guitars in the kitchen and on the porch. It’s something that intrigues me a lot, even just to write a song with him. As for the possibility of it turning into something more, he has a pretty demanding day job. So I would understand if it never came to fruition.

Cantrell previously told Metal Hammer that he considers James Hetfield one of the greatest rock and metal frontmen of all time. “What makes James a great frontman is his physical presence,” he explained. “No one else commands the same kind of respect and attention without it coming across as selfish or self-centered. It’s all about the music, the fun, the celebration and the connection with the fans,” added the Alice in Chain guitarist. It’s really inspiring. Especially because he’s been doing this for so long, he’s been at the top for so long and he’s still searching for a deeper meaning.” Cantrell was asked and he responded. “He already did it: he’s the godfather, man.”

In the hope and expectation that this collaboration can one day become concrete, Jerry Cantrell continues his career and last October he released a new album entitled “I Want Blood”.
