It’s never easy to understand Fka Twigs
Fka Twigs arrives at an office, in a jacket and shirt, late and in a panic. Her boss appears in front of her: “Do you have a second?”. And he reproaches her for not having read the messages he sent her: “That’s why I’m here in front of you in the flesh now.” Then the phone rings and the singer answers. We don’t hear the speaker on the other end of the phone, but we see Fka Twigs open her eyes wide.
And suddenly everyone around her in the office is swept away by an invisible force. At that point Fka Twigs begins to dance surrounded by some dancers to industrial-electronic sounds. What’s happening? .Is it just a projection of his mind? One would say so. The shot is reversed. Now Fka Twigs is sitting behind her desk again. But behind her, clinging to the ceiling, there is another her, monstrous. And the ceiling itself now becomes an expanse of earth: “Wonder how you feel, wonder how you feel, words cannot describe, baby this feeling deep inside,” “Imagine how you would feel, imagine how you would feel, words can’t describe, baby, this feeling that comes from deep inside,” he sings in “Eusexua”. In addition to being the title of the newly released single, “Eusexua” will also be the title of the new album by Tahliah Debrett Barnett, this is the real name of the 36-year-old British artist, among the most multifaceted, versatile and catalogable personalities of pop across the Channel.
She tries to explain what “Eusexua” is herself at the end of the single’s video: “Eusexua is a practices. Eusexua is a state of being. Eusexua is the pinnacle of human experience”. She was clearer in an interview with Vogue, in which she explained that “Eusexua”, essentially, is a term used to describe a feeling of extreme euphoria where one transcends the human form: “There is no word for this in the English dictionary. You get that feeling when you meet someone you really like and you stay kissing them all night, for hours. Without realizing how much time has passed since you started. It’s as if your bodies become one body. It’s something to do with meditation, an incredible physical experience. But for me it’s also the moment right before you have a great idea: your mind soars. That’s eusexua and it’s the only place I want to be right now”.
The album, originally expected this year, will finally arrive on January 24th. According to Fka Twigs’ previews, it will be an album fromtechno attitude and vaguely new age lyrics. It will be the first in six years for the voice of “Two weeks” (when the song was released in 2014, it went totally unnoticed: then in these ten years it was used in TV series such as “Mr.
Robot”, “Hightown”, “Power”, “Dark matter” and even chosen as the theme song for the Brazilian telenovela “Hidden truths”, as well as acting as the soundtrack for perfume advertisements), as many as “Magdalene” , while in 2022 Barnett released the mixtape “Caprisongs”. THE.n recent years his private life has been a bit turbulent. In December 2020, the London artist sued her ex-partner, the actor Shia LaBeoufaccusing him of sexual and psychological violence during their relationship, which lasted a year between 2018 and 2019. LaBeouf initially admitted that he had been harassing her and everyone around him and apologized. Then, however, he denied all the accusations made against him by his ex. The trial will begin this month in Los Angeles.
For Fka Twigs, “Eusexua” will represent a personal and artistic rebirth. This year the artist landed his first major role in Hollywood. It’s Shelly Webster in the new “The crow”, a film inspired by the character from the comic of the same name by James O’Barr. The original 1994 version told the story of Eric Draven, a classic rock musician whose soul, restless and tormented, returned from the afterlife to avenge his death along with the rape and murder of his girlfriend Shelly Webster: a film considered cursed because the lead actor, Brandon Lee, died at just 28 years old following an accidental wound caused by a gunshot, eight days before the end of production. In the new “Corvo” Eric, played by Bill Skarsgård, is instead a drug addict with a troubled childhood, who finds himself in a rehabilitation center and there he meets Shelly, a musician with similar problems. The film was not a box office success: made on a budget of $50 million, it grossed just $23.7 million. “If someone asks me what I have learned in these years, I answer: I have removed everything that distracts me from being in the condition of eusexua”, says Fka Twigs.
