Goodbye to Toby Myers, John Mellencamp’s historic bassist
At the age of 75 he died Toby Myersthe historic bassist of John Mellencamp. As reported in a note published on the Mellencamp website: “Sadness has overwhelmed the band Mellencamp and John due to the passing of one of its historic members. Toby made a great contribution to the music and the band. We will miss him as a friend and as a fellow musician” .
Jeffrey Myers he was born on September 26, 1949 in Indianapolis. He started playing as a child. In 1971 he joined the Indianapolis college funk band Pure Funk which changed its name to
Roadmaster in 1974. After being discovered by Todd Rundgreni Roadmaster they signed with Village/Mercury Records and released four albums between 1976 and 1980.
Toby Myers he joined Mellencamp’s band in 1982 and played on all of the Indiana musician’s solo albums including “Uh-Huh” from 1983 until “Rough harvest” (read the review here) in 1999. He remained with Mellencamp until 1999, the same year his son Cash was born, at which point he made the decision to stop touring. After leaving Mellencamp he performed with some groups such as No Net, Daisy Chain and occasionally with the Mellencamp tribute band, i Mellencougar.
