Getting your heart stolen by Lewis Capaldi

Getting your heart stolen by Lewis Capaldi

Let’s start from the end. The notes of “Someone you loved”the last song in the setlist of the concert Lewis Capaldistill echo in the evening of Milan Live Fair that fireworks light up the sky and prolong the enchantment of a performance that certainly satisfied the thousands of people who came to celebrate the Scottish musician. On the way home I heard a lady comment to some friends, ‘of course the songs are beautiful, but this is a concert that is good for the heart’. Let’s allow ourselves the doubt that this lady is endowed with a particularly kind and sensitive soul, but she conveys the meaning of Capaldi’s Milanese performance quite well.

Yesterday evening in Rho opened with the shows of the young Roman singer-songwriter Angelica Bovefollowed by Israeli indie rock trio Temper City but, naturally, the attention of those present was entirely focused on the live performance Lewis Capaldi. As announced, at nine in the evening, punctual as fate, not a minute earlier not a minute later, the almost thirty-year-old native of Glasgow began his show. The stage is bare, far from the expensive productions that complete the musical proposal of the pop star on duty, accompanied only by large screens on the sides, useful for allowing it to be brought closer to the view even by the many who are at the back, several tens of meters from the singer’s position.

Without getting lost in pleasantries, Capaldi introduces himself by performing, in sequence, “Hollywood”, “Grace” And “Heavenly Kind of State of Mind”accompanied in a unison song by the audience present. After this initial hat trick he takes a break to greet the public, remember that he had previously played in Italy in 2023before taking a break due to some health problems related to Tourette’s syndrome from which he suffers, he is now well and has resumed performing. Lewis is nice, talkative, ready to joke, ready not to take himself seriously. While he is speaking, a technical problem occurs, so he stops. The female part of the audience chants ‘you are beautiful’ to him, to the tune of the song Loredana Bertéhe thanks politely and replies in tone “You’re beautiful” Of James Blunt.

Once the inconvenience is overcome, the concert resumes, the songs follow one another pleasantly. Lewis Capaldi he also plays the piano, but naturally the guitar is the instrument with which he plays his many hits. It was said that the stage was free from frills, but Lewis’ physicality and the quality of his songs were enough to fill it. With him on stage there are five musicians: piano, drums, bass, trumpet, guitar. His voice is deep and confident. The melancholy “Bruises” and the most optimistic “Pointless” they are sung at the top of their lungs by the audience, but the entire set is very balanced, there are no empty passages or drops in tension in the setlist. Perhaps “Before you go”with a repeated sing along at the end, reaches the top of the ratings, but there really isn’t a song that overshadows the others. “The day that I die”on the piano, introduces it with irony by saying, ‘After an optimistic one, here’s a sad one’.

Exactly after an hour and a half, Lewis greets the audience, tomorrow night he will be in concert no less than all‘Isle of Wight. What we have left (and it’s not a little) are his beautiful ballads. Because you can spin it however you want, but without having quality songs, as the lady mentioned previously said, it’s difficult to fill your heart. Without a doubt Capaldi has the songs, plus he’s nice, a little modest, and he’s just the right amount of clumsy. For example, when he opens a bottle of water, he can’t exactly center his mouth and gets his shirt wet. Yes, just like it could happen to one of us.
