Fugazi release an album in memory of Steve Albini

Fugazi: what are the “Albini Sessions”?

Fugazi have made available (here the news) for the first time (even if some of the material had already appeared on YouTube) the so-called “Albini Sessions”, a recording session dating back to 1992 and created together with Steve Albini. These are the initial versions of the songs that would later flow into “In on the Kill Taker”, released in 1993. The recordings were made over a few days at Electrical Audiothe studio founded by Albini. At that stage, the band had worked on a first outline of the album, with arrangements and structures still evolving. However, the material was shelved and not published, while the group decided to return to the studio to record the songs again.

The definitive version of the album was in fact recorded with Ted Nicely at Inner Ear Studio and published by Dischord Records. Those recordings have over time become the official reference for “In on the Kill Taker”while the sessions with Albini remained archived for over thirty years. Now the material has been recovered directly from the original master tapes and released without substantial interventions. The release is available exclusively in digital format on the Bandcamp platform. The publication also has a charitable purpose: Fugazi have announced that the entire proceeds will be donated to Letters Charity, an organization linked to the figure and legacy of Albini. The “Albini Sessions” represent a direct testimony of the band’s creative process in that phase, offering a comparison between the first recordings and the later published versions, as well as documenting a collaboration that has remained unpublished until now. THE Fugazi never officially disbanded, but have been on indefinite hiatus since 2002-2003. Over the years, members have repeatedly ruled out a stable return, but left open the possibility of future activities without concrete announcements.
