With his pseudonym Giuseppe Chierchia, born in Pompei on 14 August 1952, he had become very popular since the 1980s with the hit “But which idea”which remained at the top of the sales charts between 1980 and 1981, also giving birth to rap in Italy. The song had sold 2 and a half million copies in our country and 12 million copies worldwide.

The song had a strong funk flavour and sampled the bass line from McFadden & Whitehead’s “Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now”. In 2005 the single was re-released by Flaminio Maphia with the title What an idea”.

His recording debut dates back to 1979 with the song “Are you free, excuse me?” then between 1980 and 2009, he wrote for various artists including Mina (But who is that guy over there?“), worked at RAI writing and hosting some of the most popular radio and television programs. He also pursued a career as an actor, both in theater, in musical comedies, and in cinema, taking part in Giuseppe Tornatore’s first film.

The last years of his life were marked by a throat tumor that forced him to undergo six surgical operations that prevented him from continuing to sing.

In 2024 he appeared on the stage of the Sanremo Festival as a guest on the evening of the covers of the Tuscan group Bnkr44 with whom he reinterpreted his great success “Ma quale idea”
