Eminem’s mother, Debbie Nelson, has died at 69
According to TMZ Debbie Nelsonmother of Eminempassed away on December 2 in St. Joseph, Missouri, due to lung cancer. In September the woman was declared terminally ill with advanced lung cancer.
Eminem’s meteoric rise to fame in the late ’90s highlighted his strained relationship with his mother. His mother went so far as to sue him for defamation, claiming that he had slandered her in some interviews, insinuating that she was an unstable drug addict.
After Eminem made her look bad in songs like “My Name Is” and “Kill You,” Nelson tried to set the record straight in two songs released with a rap duo called Idx.
Eminem responded to the lawsuit and the songs with his 2002 hit, “Cleanin’ Out My Closet.”
Nelson’s 2008 memoir, “My Son Marshall My Son Eminem”put a further strain on their relationships. As time has passed, however, it seems that the two have attempted to reconcile.
In 2013, Eminem apologized to his mother in “Headlights” from “The Marshall Mathers LP 2”.
Most recently, Debbie Nelson posted a video on social media to congratulate her son’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
“Marshall, I want to tell you that I could not let this day pass without congratulating you on your induction into the Hall of Fame,” he said. “I love you very much. I knew you’d get there. It’s been a long journey. I’m very, very proud of you.”
Eminem’s father, Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr. died in 2019 at age 67.
