“Stan”, Eminem single, published in 2000 as a third extracted from the third studio album “The Marshall Mathers”is a song symbol of the rapper’s career and one of the most famous pieces in the Hip Hop history. The song, with the legendary sampling of Dido’s “Thank You” tells the relationship that can be established between a fan and a star. And precisely on this intricate theme, Eminem has created a documentary on the “Stans”, paraphrasing his great success. As happens in the song, Stan, who represents the radical fan, is reflected so much in Eminem’s songs that he wanted to know him at all costs. And for this he writes letters. THEO storytelling of the song “Stan”, deliberately led to exasperation, represents what often happens to many fans of any artist who, before fame, has experienced situations of difficulties similar to those of his followers.

The documentary, directed by Steven Lecckart and produced by Eminem together with Paul Rosenberg, Antoine Fuqua, Tony Disanto, Stuart Parr and Shady Films, was previewed at the SxSw London Festival last June. In April 2024 Eminem had invited his most devoted fans to fill in an online questionnaire. The responses allowed the authors to identify authentic and touching stories, then choosing a “highly well -kept” cast of real fans to follow in the documentary. The aspiring participants they described their relationship with Eminem through personal anecdotes and motivational filmsThen the production team viewed hundreds of applications, favoring those who offered an unpublished perspective on the link between artist and the public. The selected fans participated in stylized reconstructions and intimate interviews, alternating archival material with unpublished confessions in front of the camera.

In the teaser of the documentary it is Eminem himself who asked questionsaddressing the viewer directly, testifying to his active role both as co-producer and as a narrative voice of the project. In the docufilm, the stories of the Fan become absolute protagonists. Through intimate interviews, archival films and stylized visual reconstructions, Stans shows how Eminem’s music has profoundly influenced the lives of many people all over the world. Some stories are moving, others disturbing, but everyone shows the profound impact that an artist can have on those who follow him. The project appears interesting because it is not based on a mere self-celbration, but tries to investigate the magical and sometimes turbid relationship that can be established with your own idol. With “Stans”, Eminem not only gets bare, but invites the public to question the meaning of fanaticism and the effect that art can have about people. It is a deep journey into the collective psyche of a generation that grew by listening to its rhymes.
