Duff McKagan releases a double live album recorded in 2019

Duff McKaganGuns n'Roses bassist and singer-songwriter, celebrates the fifth anniversary of his second solo album, “Tenderness”, with “Tenderness Live From Los Angeles”, a double collection of live songs arriving on Friday 31 May.

Recorded on June 13, 2019 at the historic El Rey Theater in Los Angeles, just days after the release of “Tenderness” (May 2019), “Tenderness Live From Los Angeles” sees McKagan take an intimate journey through his catalog of songs along with some personal covers; all supported by Shooter Jennings (winner of 3 Grammy Awards, as well as producer of “Tenderness”) and his band.

The new live release is anticipated by the video of “River Of Deceit,” originally performed by McKagan's closest friends, the Seattle supergroup Mad Season – composed of guitarist Mike McCready (Pearl Jam), drummer Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees) and the late Layne Staley (Alice in Chains) and bassist John Baker Saunders (The Walkabouts).

Says Duff McKagan.

“It was a true pleasure and honor to work with Shooter Jennings and his stellar band to record the songs that became the album “Tenderness“. Having Aubrey and John playing fiddle and pedal steel guitar on the songs really took music in a whole new direction for me. I strive for change and growth in life and these guys introduced me to a world completely new musical. This relationship became even more special when Shooter and the band decided to come on tour with me. Ted Kemp, Jamie Douglas, Aubrey Richmond, John Scheffler and Shooter had been touring together for years; compact. I won the lottery!”

“This live recording from El Rey in Los Angeles showcases not only the songs from the album, but also some covers that we started to include in the live set during the tour – continues the Guns n' Roses bassist – We put highlights a couple of tracks from this show. “Tenderness” is one of them obviously, and our version of the song by Mad Season, “River Of Deceit”. Such a beautiful song written by guys from Seattle, who I now know well, and by a couple who are no longer with us. It seems like a celebration to me. All these live shows we did on that tour felt like a loss, a prayer for better things and a beautiful reunion with all you motherfuckers.”

“One of the greatest moments of my life was making “Tenderness” with Duff McKagan,” says Jennings. “A thoughtful songwriter and even more so a caring person. Going on tour with Duff marked another dream come true! We had a lot of fun.” He continues: “I remember playing at the El Rey. The crowd was packed. I remember leaving the stage feeling like I had done something really special.”

“Being able to mix the album after all these years was a real pleasure – concludes Jennings – Being able to mix it on Frank Demedio's custom API console from 1976 (the same console that Prince recorded and mixed “Purple Rain” on) in the legendary Sunset Sound Studio 3 (aka Snake Mountain), it was like being able to distill a memory through a diamond. Sitting in that studio listening to the band play through those big speakers allowed me to lose myself in the music and let it guide me in bringing this experience to turntables around the world!”

Nominated by
Loudwire as one of the “50 Best Rock Albums of 2019,”Tenderness” marked a powerful new chapter for an ever-evolving McKagan, addressing society's ills and his personal transgressions against a rich sonic backdrop of arrangements fueled by the signature sounds of Americana.

“Tenderness Live From Los Angeles” follows the release last year of McKagan's equally well-received third solo album, “Lighthouse”
