Dream Theater are in the studio for a new album

THE Dream Theater revealed that they have begun recording their sixteenth studio album, the first with the drummer Mike Portnoy in 15 years.

The band shared the news with fans via Instagram, posting a photo in the studio and a short caption: “DT16 is officially underway!”

The prolific prog metallers have wasted no time getting to work now that Portnoy has rejoined the band. The drummer returned in October after almost 15 years away from Dream Theater, which he left after the 2009 album “Black Clouds & Silver Linings” to explore other musical paths. As for the direction of the new album, guitarist John Petrucci he said in an interview last month at NAMM 2024 (the world’s largest instrument trade show) that they hadn’t written a single note of music, but that he was excited to “reconnect with that sort of classical magic that the band began with. “

“It’s exciting,” Petrucci added. “And I think that will determine where things go.”

Meanwhile, Portnoy has continued to keep up with some fun videos of drumming content on the educational platform Drumeo. He also recently made an appearance at RUSH cover band YYNOT’s Bubba Bash benefit concert, performing the instrumental “YYZ.”
