David Gilmour in the video for “Comfortably numb” by Body Count
David Gilmour is the undisputed protagonist, next to Ice-Tof the video that accompanies the cover recorded by Body Count of Pink Floyd’s classic “Comfortably numb“. The clip was created by Jay Scorseseand features the legendary guitarist whose unmistakable solos are the backdrop to the rapper’s new lyrics.
The metal band led by rapper Ice-T released their reinterpretation of the song by the historic British band from 1979’s “The Wall” last month, as third preview of his new studio albumtitled “Merciless” and the next one is coming out November 22 as the successor to “Carnivore” (here is our review) of 2020. The album will include twelve tracks, including the previously released singles: “Psychopath” with Joe Badolato and “Fuck what you heard”.
Body Count let themselves be guided by the themes of “Comfortably numb” – originally written by the six-string virtuoso with Roger Waters – and “The Wall” for the lyrics of the new album, finding positive feedback in Gilmour so much so that he offered to play in the reinterpretation of the song. Regarding the cover, with the lyrics he revised, Ice-T stated: “For me ‘Comfortably numb’ is an introspective song: it’s me admitting and acknowledging that I’m older. I’m telling the younger generation that they have two choices: continue to keep the fire burning or give up. I try to make sense of what is happening but also point out that we are all in a place where we don’t have to face reality We have flat-screen televisions and popcorn, and we can sit and watch the chaos of the world as if it were a television show.
It doesn’t feel real until it shows up at your door. I’m a bit groggy too, like everyone else.”
For his part, David Gilmour commented: “Body Count’s version of ‘Comfortably numb’ is quite radical but the lyrics really struck me. It amazes me that a song I wrote almost 50 years ago is back with this new approach. They made it relevant again. The initial contact from Ice-T was for permission to use the song, but I thought I’d offer to play on it too. I like the new lyrics, which are about the world we live in now, which is quite scary. Ice-T and Body Count played in London recently, unfortunately I didn’t get to go and see them but if it turns up I would jump at another chance to play with them“.
