David Gilmour celebrates Pink Floyd’s return to the top
THE Pink Floyd return to the top of the British (and also Italian) charts with one of their most loved albums. “Wish You Were Here” was proclaimed Christmas Number One album in the UKthanks to the celebratory reprint for the 50th anniversary of the exit. The announcement came on Friday December 19thwhen the album took first place in the Official Albums Chart in the Christmas week, supported by the new editions digital and physical published for the occasion. A result that takes on an even more symbolic value if we consider that, at the time of its original publication in 1975“Wish You Were Here” had not reached the top of the charts.
The milestone was celebrated David Gilmourwho commented on the news on social media with a simple but enthusiastic message: “I raise my glass to the wonderful news that ‘Wish You Were Here’ is the number one Christmas album in the UK.” Success also brings with it a historical record: Pink Floyd becomes the artist/band with the longest gap between their first and last albums reaching number one in the UK. A time span of 2,620 weeksequal to over fifty yearswhich confirms the band’s longevity and unprecedented cultural impact. That of “Wish You Were Here” is also the second number one of the year for Pink Floyd. In recent months, in fact, “Pink Floyd At Pompeii – MCMLXXII” had also reached the top of the charts: the historic performance of 1971, filmed in 1972, has returned to the center of attention thanks to a re-edition with new audio mixreleased alongside the restored concert film.
