David Gilmour and that little accident on stage in Rome
The series of six concerts scheduled for the concert ended on October 3rd Circus Maximus in Romewhere David Gilmour kicked off the tour (here’s our story of the first date) in support of his new solo album, “Luck and strange” (here is our review).
With the start of the tour, which marked the the guitarist’s return to tour after eight years and was preceded by two test concerts open to the public in Brighton, the former Pink Floyd shared videos, photographs and images from behind the scenes of the Roman shows via social media. The latest video published by the guitarist on his channels concerns a small accident that occurred on the stage of the Circus Maximus on the evening of September 28th.
Accompanied by his band, Gilmour was playing the Pink Floyd classic “Comfortably numb” from the 1979 album “The wall” when, just before starting his solo of guitar, the strap of the instrument broke. “When your guitar strap breaks just before the big solo…”, “When your guitar strap breaks just before the big solo…”, is the caption of the clip shared by the 78-year-old musician, in which through split-screen montages , the scene is shown from different points of view of the various cameras.
Both in the video published by the artist, and in videos taken by fans at the concert and uploaded online, you see David Gilmour trying to cope with the situation and reattaching the guitar strap, unsuccessfully, before realizing he couldn’t fix it and then asking his backliners for help in getting another one Fender Stratocaster black just in time for the solo.
As pointed out by some attentive followers and reported on the “Guitar.com” website, the broken shoulder strap on the Circus Maximus stage appears to be the one that once belonged to Jimi Hendrix and which Gilmour’s wife, Polly Samson, had purchased in 2006 at an auction for her birthday. No one rules out that it may have been a replica, but its characteristic white crosses suggest it may have been the original.
In sharing the video of the incident on social media, David Gilmour also thanked the workshop of a craftsman who repaired the guitar strap before the next concert. “Thanks to the Bravetta shoemaker in Rome for fixing it,” the caption reads.
After the six Roman shows, the tour in support of “Luck and strange” will restart tomorrow, 9 October, from the Royal Albert Hall in Londonwhere six more concerts are scheduled before dates in Los Angeles and New York. Gilmour’s last show at the Royal Albert Hall dates back to September 30, 2016 for the tour in support of “Rattle that lock”.
The band currently touring with Gilmour consists of Guy Pratt on bass, Greg Phillinganes and Rob Gentry on keyboards, Adam Betts on drums, Ben Worsley on guitar, Louise Marshall and The Webb Sisters (Hattie & Charley) on backing vocals. Romany Gilmour, however, will perform on some dates on choirs and harp.
