How David Bowie managed to avoid being recognized in public

David Bowie’s final project was to be a musical

According to what emerged from notes that David Bowie has used until the end in his study and that they remained secret since 2016, the last project that the British artist worked before he died seems to be a musical with a temporary title “The Spectator“.

Bowie, who offered the album as an artistic testament “Blackstar“, published only a few days before his death and with whom he faced his mortality, he had kept the details and existence hidden of the project of a musical. The idea remained unknown even to the artist’s closest collaborators, until the notes were discovered, locked in his study, in 2016. The details of the project emerged now, with the donation of the materials and the rest of the archive of the late artist at the Victoria and Albert Museum, where they will be exhibited starting from 13 September, when it will open the “David Bowie Center“at the V&A East Storehouse in Hackney Wick, with special exhibitions edited by Last Dinner Party And Nile Rodgers. It was so discovered that the “Heroes” artist dedicated the last few months to a project separated by “Blackstar”, described in his notes such as A musical set in eighteenth century London.

Together with the notes on the final project, others will be visible to the public 90,000 objects related to the musicianthanks to a collection that promises to retrace the “Bowie creative processes as a musical innovator, cultural icon and supporter of self -expression and reinvention”. The collection was acquired by the V&A thanks to the contribution of the David Bowie Summerfrom the Blavatnik Family Foundation and of the Warner Music Group.

The photos of the musician’s notes, shared with the BBC, show that Bowie was very interested in the development of art and culture in 18th century London and was also attracted to stories concerning criminal bands and the notorious “Honest” thief Jack Sheppard.
