Dave Grohl: “Beer and whiskey before singing? I was lying”
In recent days, a statement by Dave Grohl has been widely circulated in which he recounted an alleged method based on beer and whiskey to protect the voice before concerts: “An hour before the show I open a beer and start drinking it. Maybe I take an Advil because my knees, my ankles hurt – I mean, I’m old. Then I take a shot of whiskey. And when I finish the beer, I open another one. Then maybe we do a group shot of whiskey, which we call ‘prayer of the band.’ Then someone says ’15 minutes’ and I open another beer and have another shot, and then I go on stage. And my doctor said, ‘Don’t change what you’re doing.’ And I was like, ‘Okay, perfect.’”
Countermand: it was a lie. Grohl himself said it during a recent surprise concert at Irving Plaza in New York, before performing “Monkey Wrench”.
“Now listen: I know I make it sound like I don’t do vocal warm-ups. I’ve often told the press, ‘No, I’ll just have a couple of beers and a shot of whiskey’. That was a lie. I do long vocal exercises every time before I go on stage, to make sure I don’t lose my voice when we play. I’ve kept that secret for a long time.
