Dave Abbruzzese: “This is why Pearl Jam fired me”
The former drummer of Pearl Jam, Dave Abbruzzese, he spoke about his departure from the band in an interview with Live From My Drum Room.
Abbruzzese explained that he finally understood the reason for his dismissal after observing the performances of the other drummers in the band. “When I got fired, the question was, ‘Why?’ I always replied: ‘I haven’t the slightest idea.’ Then, finally, I saw a video of Dave Krusen playing with the band, or Candlebox, and I thought, ‘Ah, there you go.’ Then I looked at how Jack Irons played with Pearl Jam, I looked at how Matt Cameron played with Pearl Jam, and I thought, ‘A-ha!'”
The drummer noted the main difference between his playing style and that of his predecessors and successors. “Whether it was Eddie (Vedder, ed.) or whoever, it’s hard for me to think that it was Stone (Gossard, ed.) or Mike (McCready, ed.) because of the chemistry we had on stage. But the difference was that I pushed the band. My energy behind the drums was very powerful. Whereas Dave Krusen, Jack and Matt were just back there.”
Dave Abbruzzese he then reflected on the musical dynamics within the Pearl Jam and how his approach differed from that of the other drummers who worked with the band. “Matt is incredible, Dave is incredible, Jack had a huge influence on my drumming. Because Jack with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Eleven, his drive was crazy. But with Pearl Jam it wasn’t like that… I noticed that one of the biggest things playing with Pearl Jam was Stone’s tension really pushing the beat, and Jeff (Ament) was playing way behind that.”
THE Pearl Jam they were officially fired Dave Abbruzzese on August 1, 1994, citing “personality conflicts” as the main reason for his departure. The drummer had joined the band in late 1991, shortly after the release of their first album “Ten” (read the review here), to replace the original drummer Dave Krusenwho had left the group due to alcoholism problems. During his stay in the Pearl JamAbbruzzese played on two albums “Yours.” (read the review here) of 1993 and others “Vitalogy” (read the review here) in 1994. Although the band announced that its exit was amicable, Dave Abbruzzese he contested this version of events, declaring himself, in an interview with Spin magazine, “furious and hurt”.
Side Pearl Jam some episodes that led to his dismissal are remembered. Pearl Jam Community documented that Abbruzzese accidentally broke his guitar Eddie Veddergiven to him by Pete Townshend of the Who. After leaving a note about the incident, Abbruzzese prioritized attending a drum clinic rather than staying to address the situation with the band. The bass player Jeff Ament explained to Spin magazine that the drummer’s rock star excesses, such as buying new cars, were at odds with the Seattle band’s priorities and values. Furthermore, his Texan upbringing and interest in guns did not fit with the cultural norms of the grunge scene at the time, creating further tension within the group.
