Colleagues Thank Aerosmith After Their Farewell
In the last few days the news of the withdrawal of the Aerosmith from the tours (Read here) due to the insurmountable vocal problems of Steven Tyler.
Formed in 1970, the Boston band graced the stage for more than half a century before officially calling it quits in August 2024, forgoing the rescheduled dates of their farewell tour, dubbed “Peace Out.” The departure comes after Steven Tyler suffered a vocal injury in September 2023, three dates into their final tour, when he suffered a serious vocal cord injury and a hemorrhage, forcing the band to stop.
Unfortunately, not even the scheduled break left Tyler any chance, who had to throw in the towel, cancel all the tour dates and bid a premature farewell to the stage, along with the entire band. The damage to his vocal cords is irreparable.
The news made an impact not only on the public but also on colleagues, many of whom paid homage to the historic rock ‘n’ roll band.
Tyler’s unmistakable voice and scream have played a significant role in rock history and have been an inspiration for countless hard rock bands in the 70s and 80s. Among these, certainly the Guns N’ Roseswhose guitarist, slashpaid tribute to them on Instagram.
“I just wanted to take a moment to thank Aerosmith for everything. Without this band, none of this would have been possible,” Slash wrote alongside a clip of Aerosmith performing “Train Kept A Rollin’” live at The Midnight Special in 1974.
Also Tracii Gunsguitarist for Guns N’ Roses and LA Guns, had kind words for Aerosmith on social media. “I love you Aerosmith,” he wrote. “Thank you for letting me listen to your records from when I was a teenager to this day. Thank you for the education and the memories.”
In a comment also the Black Croweswho were scheduled to support Aerosmith on their Peace Out tour, shared their grief and admiration for the band. “We are shocked and saddened by today’s news,” they wrote. “Nothing but love and respect for our friends in Aerosmith. Thank you so much for all the incredible memories.” They also announced that they will continue touring this fall in support of their new album Happiness Bastards.
Another long and heartfelt tribute came from the Queen guitarist Brian May. “This brought a tear to my eye,” May wrote on Instagram. “Aerosmith has been a huge part of my life, as it has been for millions of other rock fans. Steve Tyler is one of the greatest vocalists and frontmen of all time – and it’s heartbreaking that his amazing voice has been so damaged. We all send you our love and prayers for your recovery, Steve. It’s also typical of the band’s pure class that they made and broadcast this brave decision in such style. Aerosmith’s career is truly something to be celebrated forever. All things must pass, but Aerosmith’s inspiring work will live on, along with the memories of one of the greatest bands to ever grace a stage.”
Also Sammy Hagar recalled the event Friday during a stop on his Best of All Worlds tour in Clarkston, Michigan. The Chickenfoot musician performed a cover of the Beatles’ “Helter Skelter” in homage to Aerosmith, who along with Hagar’s Montrose performed the song during their first joint concert in 1974.
“Honestly, hats off to one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll singers of all time, Steven Tyler, for saying, ‘I can’t sing anymore. I’m done.’ Fuck yeah!” Hagar exclaimed. “Listen, it’s honorable. It’s fucking honorable. The day I can’t sing anymore, I’m going to do the same fucking thing, and that’s what a lot of other motherfuckers should have done a long time ago. So let’s do one for them. Let’s do one for Aerosmith.”
On his part Billy Sheehanbassist (considered one of the best in the world) among others with UFO, David Lee Roth, Mr. Big, The Winery Dogs and Satriani thus retraced his memories for the band
“A really great group: we saw them open for the first time for the Mott The Hoople together with the New York Dolls on a Halloween night in Buffalo in the 70s. Years later the Talas (one of Sheehan’s bands) opened for them at a “secret” club in Buffalo where they introduced themselves as “Dr J Jones and Interns”. Mr Big opened for the European leg of the “Get A Grip” tour in the 90’s. Class act every time. Wonderful people. We wish them all the best”
