Chris Martin confirms: stop Coldplay after twelve albums
Chris Martin of the Coldplay has, since 2021 (Read here), hinted at the imminent end of the band. But he has now confirmed exactly when the British group will retire: after the release of their 12th album. Following the imminent release of the new album there are still two left.
In an interview given to Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1Martin spoke about the group’s prospects ahead of the release of their tenth album, “Moon Music,” scheduled for October 4th. “We’re only going to do 12 proper albums and that’s for real. Yes, I promise,” Martin told Lowe. “Because less is more and for some of our critics, even less would be even more! It’s really important to have that limit.”
While 12 may seem like an arbitrary number of albums for a band, Martin sees it more as a way to emulate the greats. “There are only seven Harry Potters. The Beatles albums are only 12 and a half, Bob Marley about the same, so all our heroes. Also, having this limit means that quality control is so high right now, which It’s great. And so, even where we might be slacking off, we’re trying to improve.”
Although their 12th album will be their last, Martin said there will likely be side projects with bandmates Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion after they call it quits.
But for now Coldplay fans can wait for “Moon Music” which arrives on October 4th and after which there will only be “two more proper albums” from the band.
Coldplay just wrapped up the European leg of their long-running “Music of the Spheres Tour,” which became the first rock tour (and second ever) to gross a billion dollars. The next tour dates will see them busy in Australia and New Zealand starting from the end of October. In 2025 Chris Martin and co will headline Asian stadiums, as well as perform at a series of newly announced summer concerts in the UK, including eight dates at London’s Wembley Stadium.
So the road between here and the last album is paved with intense live activity.
