Bon Iver: The Return With New Music
“SPEYSIDE” is the title of the single that marks the discographic return of Bon Iver, Justin Vernon’s project whose last studio album, “I, I” (here is our review), dates back to 2019.
The song, which is not entirely new to fans of the Wisconsin singer-songwriter, will be released with a video next Friday, September 20. Justin Vernon created the track, recording the guitar parts and vocals, as well as handling the mixing and technical production of the song, the latter process in collaboration with Ian Gold. “SPEYSIDE” also features contributions from longtime collaborator Rob Moose, for whom he recorded the viola part and handled the string arrangements.
The single, anticipated in recent weeks by mysterious posts and videos shared by the musician on social media, had already been presented live by Justin Vernon in some Bon Iver-branded live shows between 2021 (for the first time during a small event for fifty people in Vernon’s hometown of Eau Claire, Wisconsin) and 2023.
“SPEYSIDE” is expected to be a preview of the Justin Vernon project’s upcoming studio album, details of which are currently unknown. Following the release of “I, I,” Bon Iver released the 2020 singles “PDLIF” and “AUATC,” followed by Vernon’s guest appearances on Taylor Swift’s “Exile” and “Evermore,” and British singer-songwriter The Japanese House’s “Dionne.” They followed up with the “Don’t Look Up” soundtrack track “Second Nature,” and collaborations with Ethan Gruska on 2022’s “So Unimportant” and The National on “Weird Goodbyes.”
With his group Bon Iver, Justin Vernon has also been engaged in a long tour that between 2022 and 2023 stopped first in Milan and then last year at the Prima Estate festival in Lido di Camaiore.
