Billy Corgan thinks he’s an underrated guitarist
Billy Corgan he founded the Smashing Pumpkins in Chicago in 1988. The debut album, “Gish”arrived in 1991 and since then they have established themselves as one of the most influential bands of the nineties. Like most groups of that time, they are known more for their albums and songs than for the musical talent of their individual members.
Corgan doesn’t agree with this generalization and in an interview with Guitar World he complained about not finding his name in the lists that periodically elect the “best guitarists”, claiming to be better than many who are included.
This is his thought: “Many people don’t recognize my contribution as a guitarist.
They don’t even assume that I’m the one who plays the guitar a lot. There are these stupid lists that come out about the greatest guitarists, I’m not usually on those lists. Or they put someone behind me who I could play around. I don’t want to denigrate the person in front of me or the people in front of me, but come on. I’m enough of a guitarist to know who a great guitarist is.”
He continued further, “Once you get beyond, say, Zakk Wylde, Dimebag Darrell, and the really great Randy Rhoads, there are a lot of people pretending to play guitar. I certainly have no problem believing that I’m better than many of them. If I’m being honest – and maybe this isn’t the best way to do it – but if I’m being honest, people have a hard time understanding that, as far as the Smashing Pumpkins are concerned, I write the songs, the lyrics, the melodies, the arrangements. and I play most of the guitars. Besides, I’m capable of doing a solo. I think it’s hard for people to understand.”
