Amy Winehouse: father loses lawsuit over sale of memorabilia

It ended in defeat for Mitch Winehouse the legal battle in the UK High Court. Amy’s father, acting as administrator of his daughter’s inheritance, had sued two historic friends of the singer, the stylist Naomi Parry And Catriona Gourlayaccusing them of having profited unduly from the sale of the singer-songwriter’s personal items.

Judge Sarah Clarke KC fully rejected Mitch Winehouse’s claims for compensation of hundreds of thousands of pounds. According to the accusation, the two women “deliberately hid” the auctioning of dozens of lots (which took place between 2021 and 2023 in the United States) to pocket the profits.

However, today’s ruling found that there was no evidence that Parry and Gourlay acted in bad faith or concealed the sales. The judge stressed that Mitch could have discovered the details of the auctions with “reasonable diligence”, disproving claims that legal action was the only way to get answers. It was confirmed that the items in question (including clothes, bags and accessories) had been legally donated from Amy Winehouse to friends or were already owned by them.

After the ruling, Naomi Parry expressed relief at the end of a years-long legal nightmare: “Today the High Court cleared my name of unfounded and deeply damaging allegations. My relationship with Amy was based on trust, loyalty and genuine love. To see that bond misrepresented publicly was painful and unfair.”
