Alice Cooper remembers the follies of Keith Moon
The 77-year-old American rocker Alice Cooper in an interview granted to Emo by 955KLOS told an anecdote featuring the exuberant drummer of Who, Keith Moonknown for both his talent on stage and his unpredictable behavior in his private life.
This is the story of Alice Cooper. “Keith was certainly the clown prince of rock and roll and probably a self-confessed madman, but he was also the best drummer I ever heard. Yes, he was a truly extraordinary drummer. One time I came home, I opened the door, and Cheryl, my wife, and I had just gotten married. He was 18. He was standing there, dressed as a French maid with a duster, and he said to me, ‘I’ve cleaned the whole house. Can I have the evening off, Mr. Cooper?’ I said, ‘Well, of course.’ My wife asked me: ‘Who is he?’. Because he had no idea. I told her: ‘It’s Keith, don’t worry.'”
Cooper, whose real name is Vincent Damon Furnierhe didn’t limit himself to recounting that strange episode, he continued by saying that Moon’s visits to his house were frequent and the passion he had for costumes and impromptu antics. “He’d come stay at your house for a month and then he’d go to Harry’s house for a month, but it was really fun. You’d be driving down Laurel Canyon and all of a sudden you’d find him on the roof of the car. With the Vampires, what he would do was go to Western Costume almost every night. One night he’d show up dressed as the Queen of England. The next night he’d be a Groucho Marx version of Hitler. Every night. And we’d be there clapping.”
