A box set celebrating the years of CBGB is coming out

The CBGBthe Lower East Side music club in New York that became the center of the scene’s growth punk rock of the Big Apple in the 70s, with bands like Television, Ramones, Blondie and immediately afterwards Patti Smith And Talking Headsis celebrated with a 4-CD box set entitled “CBGB: A New York City Soundtrack 1975-1986” which will be released on January 30th.

This is the label’s statement Cherry Red Records: “In December 1973 Hilly Kristal – a photo of him in front of the club is on the cover of the box set – changed the name of his roots music bar from Hilly’s on the Bowery to CBGB and changed his music policy to book mostly rock bands. Many of them left him cold (“No one likes you, but I’ll want you back,” he told Joey Ramone), blissfully unaware of how important his little club would soon become.”

Within fifteen months, the five bands that make up CBGB’s flagship debuted: Television in March 1974, followed by the Ramones in August, Blondie in October, then Patti Smith in February 1975 and the Talking Heads four months later. In the fall of 1977, Patti Smith was the only one still playing there. After that first wave, new musical styles followed: No Wave (Sonic Youth, Bush Tetras), post-punk (Ritual Tension, Khmer Rouge), mutant funk and R&B (James Chance & The Contortions, Mink DeVille), art-rock, hardcore punk (Bad Brains, Beastie Boys) and power pop (The dBs).

The
CBGB
the club, no longer exists, but what happened within those walls continues to resonate around the world.
