“We received criticism after abandoning English and leaving the dark pot”
After a complete restructuring of Levitantsthe Pucelana band led by Sergio Isabel returns with “What will burn tomorrow” (Calaverita, 26), their most ambitious work and with which this fall they will be touring theaters throughout the country.
Three years have passed since it saw the light “Immediate future” (Subterfuge, 23), which was the previous album of Levitants. A fruitful period of time for Sergio Isabel, vocalist of the group, from Valladolid. “Our previous album was very important because it came after I was left alone in charge of the project. I showed myself that the path I had in my head was possible and, although I am very proud of that album, I did not have the time I would have liked to think about many of the decisions I made. I simply continued forward as a way of survival”.
“We have more than forty closed concerts ahead of us in venues throughout Spain”
A career that evolved and included a change of formation… and language, with the band switching to Spanish. “We received a lot of criticism for abandoning English and getting out of the dark pot in which they had us pigeonholed, but we also felt the affection of that new audience that enjoyed the songs. Furthermore, over time part of the previous audience ended up understanding and enjoying that evolution”.
For its part, “What will burn tomorrow” The sound exudes a palpable change. A situation that has to do with the change of producer, but that, above all, lies in the way in which the album itself was recorded. “The production and attention to detail have taken on a new level for us. There is also much more presence of the acoustic guitar, an instrument with which I compose most of the songs before taking them to the venue and which until now had not had much of a place in the studio, in addition to new instruments and different styles to create a global imaginary”. Some news that extends to the narrative level. “In this album there is much more reflection than in the previous one. The lyrics become a fundamental pillar of it and the anger that we could have had on the previous one, now mutates into irony and black humor”.
After the reception of the immediately previous work, it would be logical to think that Levitants They are destined to make an important leap within the scene. “We feel a certain expectation towards the new album and it is exciting to see that your work reaches people, but I prefer not to think about it. If more people come to see us it will be a great joy, but if that doesn’t happen, we will continue touring and making songs for us and whoever wants to hear them”.
Although interesting bands are emerging in their city, they do not feel completely identified with a local scene. “There have always been interesting things. Now there is an important rise in Castilian folk and its inclusion in other styles. We see that scene as privileged observers and we celebrate it, even if we do not belong to it”. They are looking forward to the increasingly closer 2027 and have a good handful of projects ahead. “It looks like it’s going to be a busy year. We have more than forty closed concerts ahead of us in venues throughout Spain and, as if that weren’t enough, we also plan to start recording new material in the spring.”.
