Peón Kurtz, founder of Def Con Dos, dies from a heart attack

The musician dies Jose Costasfounder of Def With Two and pioneer of rap metal in Spanish, at 55 years of age due to a heart attack.

Last Friday, José Costas, better known as Pawn Kurtzdue to a heart attack after he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Álvaro Cunqueiro Hospital in Vigo, his hometown. Rapper, DJ and base creator, Peón was the brother of Miguel Costasfounder and vocalist of Siniestro Total, and of Rosa Costas Peónmember of Federal Airlines.

Peón founded Def Con Dos at Christmas 1987 with Caesar Strawberry and Julian Hernandez of Total Loss. He published more than a dozen albums with the group, such as the well-known “Alzheimer’s” and “Ultramemia”from the mid-90s, years in which they also became popular for being the authors of the main songs of Álex de la Iglesia’s films “Acción Mutante” and “El día de la bestia”. He remained in the group for almost thirty years, until he was fired in 2016 amidst controversy and rumors of internal tensions.

Despite not being linked to any other formation since his departure from the band in 2016, since he returned to his origins as a DJ, Peón’s name has always been present when talking about Def Con Dos for his inimitable collaboration in the sound of a group that has ended up being one of the most important, transgressive and pioneering formations in fusing punk, rap and metal on the national scene.

“I would continue repeating and enjoying my story exactly the same a thousand times, with the good and the bad, my Def spirit remains intact and my punk attitude does not diminish, but is reinforced with this sad end.” With these words he said goodbye to the public after the abrupt departure of Def Con Dos, and with them we remember him today. Rest in peace.
