A film festival

This week another edition of the Atlàntida Mallorca Film Festthe festival organized by Filmin which brings together great films and free outdoor concerts in the Balearic capital for the enjoyment of all the citizens of Palma. Mondosonoro has been present in this edition to cover the gigs that took place in Ses Voltes, bringing together people as diverse as Ouineta, La Zowi, Martin or Barry B (apart from the concerts of La Bien Querida or Nacho Vegas in Misericordia). With almost 60,000 spectators, this 16th edition the festival surpassed its own record, also taking care of its online programming (which will be available until the end of August on Filmin), and with great events such as the presentation of the Master of Cinema award to the composer Alexandre Desplat (with the help of Queen Letizia) or the national premiere of the highly anticipated “The loved one” by Rodrigo Sorogoyen. “There is something very beautiful about this festival: whoever comes one year, repeats, and returns accompanied”says its director Jaume Ripoll proudly, “That word of mouth recommendation is probably the greatest recognition a festival can have.”

As for this year’s record, “Lionel”Carlos Saiz’s debut feature, won the Best Film award, “Bad beast” by Bàrbara Farré (“Selftape”) for Best National Film and “The cycle of love” by Orlando von Einsiedel the Audience Award. Besides, “The Meat” by Joan Porcel, based on the work by Lluís Garau, took the award for Best Balearic Feature Film, “The barrack” by Júlia Castaño for Best Short Film, and the Trends section started with an excellent winner: “Blue Film” by Elliot Turtle, which premieres this week on Filmin, and whose actors we were able to speak with in a soon-to-be published interview.

The first of the days that Mondo Sonoro was in the Atlàntida Mallorca Film Fest It was July 29, the day of Teo Lucadamo and Barry B.. Both had great success in the call, starting Teo Lucadamowho we will see soon on the big screen, as part of the highly anticipated “The Black Ball”. The author of “The White Rapper’s Dilemma” presented two recent collaborative works, “London Trip The Mixtape” and “National Rap Stars.” In fact, Bella Kanela and DAWIT, present on those albums, joined him mid-concert. Of course, there was no shortage of “tengo Calor” in the final stretch, where Teo took off his shirt in honor of the song’s ‘I stay naked’; With the stifling temperature, we bet he would have done it even if he said the lyrics ‘I put on an anorak’.

The witness was taken by Gabriel Barriuso: Barry B took us to pop-rock with a somewhat more adult present target, ceding the prominence of the setlist to his EP “Improperly Calibrated Childhood” with songs like “Do You Want to Self-Destruct with Me?” or “VICTORIA”, but also leaving room for songs from “Chato” or recent singles like “Monster Truck”. The most popular moments were the collaborations with Aitana, “TRANKIS”, and especially the one in charge of closing, “Yo thought that God had touched me” with Carolina Durante, but those present were dedicated throughout the show.

The next day it was the turn of Martin Urrutiawith whom we took the opportunity to chat after his gig in an interview to be published soon. The Basque is responsible for one of the best national debuts this year, “The Sunstroke”and there were expectations to see how he defended such an interesting work live. The result was more than up to par. Urrutia knew how to convey the sensitivity and innocence present in songs like “Otro Verano” or “Piscinavaca”, and at the same time the mix of joy and nostalgia in more upbeat songs like “Jérémie” or “Nuevos memorias”. There was even room for “Rompeolas”, and of course for the version of “Nadadora” by Family with which he presented this project, but it was not the only cover: “Cruz de navajas” by Mecano and “Everybody’s changing” by Keane were there. And be careful because he also presented a new song; Apparently he doesn’t know if it will come out, but I hope so, because that ‘I have a great time alone in my room’ fit perfectly with the rest of the setlist. Due to the interview, it was impossible for us to cover Mainline Magic Orchestra’s subsequent gig, but, as we learned, they raised the entire audience also with the help of external elements such as visuals or their costumes, and served as opening act for the screening of “Jim Queen.”

The halfway point of the festival gave us the most notable gig for whoever writes this, that of Ouinetadespite the fact that it was the day with the worst humidity of the entire week, making it sometimes difficult to breathe. Marta Ros has been delivering great songs in Catalan for some time that have been increasingly heard throughout the peninsula, and she has just published her first full-length, “Verified Ouineta”in addition to already having a lot of experience behind her as a choreographer for Amaia, Rigoberta Bandini or Maria Jaume. The gig was dedicated above all to presenting this album, although there was no shortage of previous bops like “DMs”, and later ones like “Bota Bota”, the feat with Julieta that just came out and that couldn’t sound more like a summer song. Her skills as a multidisciplinary artist were clear in a show where she used just one plastic cane to fill the stage as if there were ten dancers and a set of sets and lights. The artist also supported the festival, encouraging the public to stay for the movie that came next (“Erupcja”starring Charli XCX) and then to Lorna’s concert.

And indeed then it was the turn of l0rnaone of the most crowded concerts of the festival. Lorena Zamora has been gaining more and more fans this year, even surpassing Metrika in Spotify listeners, despite the fact that some initially saw her as her ‘little cousin’. In fact, if you ask a 20-year-old about Lorna, they think of the Andalusian, not the “Papichulo” singer. All this was demonstrated in a show full of attitude and hits, where songs from last year’s full-length “MISS-UNDERSTOOD” and this year’s EP “LUMI DE OROS” were presented. The audience vibrated while Lorena sang the bars of songs like “MARIMANDONA” or “Lip Combo”.

Although if it’s about decibels and jumping people, without a doubt the final fireworks were saved for the last day. In parking There were more people than at any other concert: the majority of the audience was wearing just enough clothing to withstand the heat of the continuous pogos from practically the beginning. The peak was surely “Humedad Valenciana”, the feat with Metrika that drove everyone present crazy. By the way, little is said about this festival’s ability to select emerging artists who go on to rock the beast: we have talked about l0rna, but let’s remember that last year Metrika was one of the members of the lineup, before signing for Sony, or also our celebrated BAJOCERO X.

After the departure of parkingit was projected “On Fire”a film by Estel Díaz with a young cast where an excellent Omar Banana stands out, and it ended in style. Because if Queen Letizia was at the closing gala, the Atlàntida had actually already been closed the day before by the unofficial Queen: Zowi. Zoe was the only one to bring a platform to the stage, and throughout her performance she made it clear that, although there were dancers and special events (like the fan whose nails were painted during the gig), she was enough and more than enough to close seven festivals if necessary. Both by number of hits and by presence and atmosphere: people chanted, shouting ‘I go out into the street with the curlers’ from “Bitch Mode”, they indulged in the cockiness of “Filet Mignon” or “Sugar Mami” and were moved by what is possibly the best song of both her and Soto Asa, the excellent “Smartphone”, to name just a few examples.
