“Gish” by Smashing Pumpkins: the return of a classic
Long before becoming consecrated as generational icons, the Smashing Pumpkins they were young musicians looking for success in the rock scene of the early nineties. Exactly 35 years ago, the band debuted on the scene with “Gish“, a record destined to become a true milestone of that decade.
To pay homage to the 35th anniversary of this historic debut, two new vinyl editions arrive on the market, available here: a gray vinyl 180 grams, with pink and purple splatter, inside the original packaging from 1991, limited edition; standard black vinyl weighing 180 grams, in the original packaging from 1991.
Recalling the genesis of the record, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin observes: “Gish it represents our dreams, our ambitions and our talent in that magical moment. It offers audiences an exclusive window into the creative urgency that would later shape the Pumpkins’ artistic identity.”
Originally published on May 28, 1991“Gish” quickly established itself as one of the biggest independent commercial successes of the time, broadening the horizons and potential of alternative music produced outside the major labels. Recorded at Smart Studios in Madison under the guidance of the producer Butch Vigthe album quickly proved that the band was difficult to label. Often hastily associated with the nascent grunge movement, the Pumpkins actually offered a complex sound architecture that masterfully blended rock and heavy metal, psychedelic drifts, pop melodies and shoegaze atmospheres.
Driven by now classic singles such as “I Am One”, “Siva” and “Rhinoceros”, “Gish” reached Platinum certification, laying the foundations for the overwhelming worldwide success that the band would enjoy in the following years. Even today, specialized critics continue to celebrate it as an absolute masterpiece in the history of rock, capable of influencing entire generations.
The news doesn’t stop at record releases. The Smashing Pumpkins have announced the new tour “Rats In A Cage”, which will see them busy from September to November. The concerts will propose an ambitious formula divided into two sets very distinct: a performance entirely dedicated to celebrating the universe of “Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness” and an anthological journey through almost forty years of career, from the rough sounds of “Gish” to the tracks of the latest studio project, “Aghori Mhori Mei”.
