Since its release there have been rumors of a sequelsand now it has arrived official confirmation which is under development.
On the podcast “The Town With Matt Belloni”, Adam Fogelsonhead of the production company Lionsgate, said that it is likely that a sequel could be filmed this year or next, and that there is enough material to justify a sequel. “There is an enormous amount of music … and life experiences separate and distinct from the allegations … that would fill more than a second film,” Fogelson said. When asked what might be included, he pointed to the artist’s historic halftime performance at the 1993 Super Bowl as an example.
However, the production timeline remains vague as the director of the first film, Antoine Fuquais already involved in a Netflix project with Denzel Washington. The executive also discussed the possibility of such a film including the allegations of sexual abuse moves against Jackson, which the artist and his heirs have always rejected. Michael was supposed to include them in the plot, but a clause in a legal agreement forced the production to spend 15 million dollars on additional filming, ending the film at a different time in her life and shifting the narrative tension to her relationship with her father, Joe (Colman Domingo).
