Dave Grohl: “Alice in Chains is my favorite band”

During a recent interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music, Dave Grohl he said he had developed a new enthusiasm for a historic grunge band: the Alice in Chains: “They’re my favorite band now.”

The Foo Fighters frontman explained that this “rediscovery” happened rather spontaneously, while listening to music with his daughters. Precisely in that context he began to appreciate the Seattle group’s catalog more, coming to consider them his favorite band today.

Grohl admitted, with some irony, that he probably should have recognized their value many years ago. Instead, only now he fully realized their greatnesswondering where he was “when all this was happening.”

During the conversation, Grohl also reflected on the grunge period and its protagonists. He praised in particular Kurt Cobaincalling him one of the best authors ever, capable of creating songs destined to remain in history. Talking about the most iconic voices of that era, he also mentioned Chris Cornell And Layne Staleyunderlining their ability to range between different registers while maintaining a unique emotional intensity.

According to Grohl, it’s just that kind of authenticity to make certain songs so powerful: when a song really works, it becomes part of the life of those who listen to it, almost as if it became part of their emotional DNA.

The musician described this new passion for Alice in Chains as something surprising but also natural. Although they were contemporaries of Nirvana in the ’90s, Grohl feels he has only recently reevaluated them. Today, however, he has no doubts: for him they represent one of the most engaging musical experiences of the moment. And even if this awareness came “late”, it seems to have had a profound impact on his way of listening to and experiencing music.
