Beach Boys, a box set is released for the 60th anniversary of “The Pet Sounds”

The 60th anniversary of “Pet Sounds” (read the review here), the masterpiece album of Beach Boys published on May 16, 1966will be celebrated by Capitol Records/UMe with “The Pet Sounds Sessions Highlights”. The collection brings together material from the 1997 Grammy-nominated 4-CD set, “The Pet Sounds Sessions”which documented the 1965-66 recording sessions.

“The Pet Sounds Sessions Highlights” will come out on May 15thincludes 25 alternate versions, a cappella and recording sessions, all previously unreleased on vinyl. It will be available in a 2-CD box set and multiple 2-LP configurations, including standard black vinyl and limited-edition splatter/colored variants, each format including new liner notes by music historian Beach Boys Howie Edelsonalong with a detailed sessionography. A complete 90-track digital box set will also be released, titled “The Pet Sounds Sessions”.

Ahead of the box set’s release, i Beach Boys have published their performances of the classics, “Sloop John B” And “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”. The first song features an a cappella version that isolates the vocal harmonies of Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Carl Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnstonalong with an alternate version with Carl replacing Brian on lead vocals.

he explained, “One thing that’s been attributed to me is, ‘Don’t mess with the formula.’ But I never said that! It’s the most famous thing I’ve said that I never said. First of all, I named the album. Secondly, all of us – me, Carl, Al and Bruce – worked hard on the harmonies. ‘Pet Sounds’ is fantastic for so many reasons. How can you not appreciate that music?”

For
Brian Wilson
the album represents the development in his artistic evolution. In 2016 he said: “I decided to experiment with a new genre of music. I was young and creative and we did a really good job. I’m happy that people still like the album. It makes me proud.”
