Depeche Mode, the “M” movie-Centh in theaters at the end of October
The Depeche Mode have announced the world release in “M” cinemas, a film-conference directed by the Mexican director Fernando Frías de La Parra and shot during the four dates of the band at the Sol Foro di Mexico City, part of the Mori Tour Memento held between 2023 and 2024. The news of the film had been given last spring: now new details have been communicated. The appointment is set for the end of October, with projections all over the world in IMAX and standard format.
The film documents Dave Gahan and Martin Gore’s performances in front of over 200,000 spectators in the Mexican capital and tells, through the gaze of Frías, the link between the band’s music and the local culture. “M” is produced by Trafalgar Releasing, Sony Music Entertainment and Mercury Studios.
“In his heart, our new film ‘M’ concerns the profound link between music, culture and people – and Fernando Frías, who directed and conceived the film, has done a beautiful job in telling that story through the lens of Mexican culture and our concerts in Mexico City,” said Dave Gahan.
As GPò told by Rockol, the project marks the first collaboration between the band and Fernando Frías, winner of an Ariel prize (the Mexican equivalent of the Oscar) for “Ya No Estay Aquí”. The director combines the filming live with moments that tell stories and atmospheres related to the city and local fans, transforming the film into a hybrid work between documentary and concert.
The Tour of the Depeche Mode ended last April: the tour had started in March 2023, seeing the band returning to the stages to present the fifteenth studio album “Memento Mori”, in its first series of concerts without the keyboardist Andy Fletcher, who passed away in 2022. The tour also touched Italy both in 2023 in the stadiums and the following year in the buildings. According to the original press release, “through the creative lens of Frías, the cinematographic experience intertwines the images of the three sold out concerts held at the Sol Forum of Mexico City to explore the parallels among the themes of the last album of the Depeche Mode, ‘Memento Mori’, and the profound bond with the death and mortality present in Mexican culture”.
